2. 1 million acres are scorched so far across Oregon and Washington, and dozens of fires still burn, even beating out the historic 2020 wildfire season’s 1. 9 million acres in the two states, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.

“It has been an extraordinary fire year.”   Amanda Roberts is the manager for the Bureau of Land Management’s Prineville District.  “Wildfire is the only natural disaster that we ask people to stand in front of.  We don’t ask people to stand in front of a hurricane or a flood, but we do ask people to stand in front of a wildfire. And we’ll only do that if we can ensure the safe operations of those people.

Oregon’s grassland megafires have almost entirely fueled this record setting wildfire season.
