PORTLAND, Ore. — One person was injured, and another is in custody following a shooting Thursday afternoon on Southwest Capitol Highway, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

The shooting occurred in a parking lot behind the Islamic School of Portland, located a few blocks south of Southwest Barbur Boulevard and Interstate 5.

Police responded to reports of gunfire at about 2:23 p.m. and found a man injured in the parking lot of a nearby Shell gas station. The victim was transported to a hospital, but his condition has not been released.

Authorities said the suspected shooter entered the school building after the shooting but later exited voluntarily and was taken into custody without incident. Police believe the two men knew each other and were connected to the school and a nearby mosque.

The suspect, identified as Noureddine Dib, 42, of Beaverton, has been booked into jail on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Officers searched the school to ensure the safety of the students and staff. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Police taped off part of the adjacent highway as officers continued their investigation Thursday afternoon.

While there were children inside the school during the shooting, police emphasized that the incident occurred outside in the parking lot. Investigators said the shooting was an isolated event and not related to the school.

“This was not a school shooting or a bias crime,” said Portland Police Chief Bob Day in a statement. “We are grateful for our strong partnership with the Muslim community and the ongoing support from the PPB Muslim Advisory Council in promoting community safety.”
