Protesters Vacate City Hall Sidewalks

Campers across the street from Portland City Hall
A group of homeless campers on the sidewalks surrounding Portland City Hall acted before a city imposed deadline of Monday morning to vacate or face arrest. They gathered Sunday to scrub the sidewalks clean, then picked up their stuff and moved across the street around Terry Schrunk Plaza.
Protesters planned to move back in after the city brought in a power washing crew to make sure the job was done. The city will allow them, but will enforce more rules this time, especially not blocking sidewalks, citing those who use alcohol, drugs or leave a temporary structure standing. A spokeswoman for Mayor Sam Adams says they can stay there as long as they respect other people's rights.
Occupy movement activist Cameron Whitten has been on a 46-day hunger strike for homeless rights and fair housing outside City Hall. He's planning an
Epic Rally for Housing Justice this Friday to mark 50 days.
