Searching from the air and land

A 13-year-old Sedro-Woolley, Washington boy is still missing after a boating accident on the Columbia River yesterday morning.  He was fishing on Memorial Day with his father and grandfather near Lady Island between Camas and Washougal.

The boat capsized as they tried to recover a stuck anchor using the motor.  It lost steering, turned downstream and was dragged underwater by the stern.

A nearby fisherman rescued the two men, 59-year-old Robert Schmalz of Marysville and 34-year-old Eric Schmalz from Sedro-Woolley.  The unidentified boy, Eric's stepson, could not be found.  A Coast Guard helicopter and river patrol boats searched unsuccessfully for him.  Nobody was wearing a life jacket.

They were in an area known as the "Slots", where the water is deep and the current swift.  Authorities plan to search the rest of this week.
