Salem Budget Meeting Tonight
The Salem City Council meets
tonight to hammer out a budget, and it won't be an easy discussion. A final vote won't happen until June 11th, but city councilors need to find a way to cut $6.5 million. City manager Linda Norris says there has already been cuts to services in every city department and now comes the time when they need to cuts jobs. Already the city has laid off five police officers and other citizen employees within the department. It closed two fire stations as well, which has the firefighters union
upset. The union hopes it can gain enough public support to reopen the stations, but Norris doesn't see that happening. She says it could only happen if the city cut something else.
