The Portland School Board hasĀ  approved the merger of Chief Joseph Elementary and Ockley Green next fall and the closure of Ockley Green's magnet program. The decision ends seven months of sometime heated discussion about what to do with the school district's Jefferson cluster. Last night's board vote was unanimous. School Superintendent Carole Smith says one of the themes she kept hearing from parents was the cluster needs stability in order to give the schools a chance to succeed. Two buildings were closed in the cluster last year. The new plan will let theĀ  schools try to grow their own enrollments.
