Only two of Oregon's five members of the US House voted for the fiscal cliff plan approved last night. Democrat Suzanne Bonamici and Republican Greg Walden voted yes. Bonamici says she would have preferred to vote on a comprehensive bill that  keeps taxes low for the middle class, extends unemployment insurance and addresses the debt and deficit in a balanced way. She says this bill does some of those things, although it falls short in other areas. She says the bill is not perfect, but is the result of compromise and negotiation and she hopes it represents the opening of a new chapter after one of the most inefficient sessions of Congress in memory.
Walden also says the plan is not perfect. But he says he he will not sit by as taxes go up on all Americans, including more than $3,000 this year for the average Oregon family. Walden says now that tax relief has been extended, it's time for the President to work with Congress to get the nation's fiscal house in order by addressing the underlying problem, which is spending.
